Kanal (pronounced [kaˈnaːl] or [kaˈnaːu̯]; Italian: Canale, German: Kanalburg), frequently referred to as Kanal ob Soči ("Kanal on the Soča"; pronounced [kaˈnaːl ɔp ˈsoːtʃi] or [kaˈnaːu̯ ɔp ˈsoːtʃi]; Italian: Canale d'Isonzo), is a settlement mostly on the left bank of the Soča River in the Slovene Littoral, the traditional region in southwestern Slovenia. It is an important crossing point over the Soča. At its eastern border, on the left bank of the Soča, runs the Bohinj Railway, the railway track linking the Central Europe and the Mediterranean. The name Kanal comes from the shape of the valley.

History

The first mention of the settlement dates to 1140, the year 1336 mentions the name of Dvor Svete Marije, and bridge in 1350. The center of the town was fortified in the Middle Ages. There are four towers left called bastions. There used to be a small castle, which was destroyed in 1264 and later rebuilt after the First World War as a residential building. In the 19th century small manufacturing plants were established. From 1900 until 1906, the Bohinj Railway was built.

Kanal (unit)

A kanal is a unit of area used in parts of northern Pakistan and in India. In Pakistan different conversions exist in various areas: a kanal is generally considered equal to 5400 square feet, but it is equal to 4500 square feet in Lahore. In India it is generally considered equivalent to 4500 square feet or one-eighth of an acre.

Description

A kanal is a traditional unit of land area. In India it is used in the northern states of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and North Eastern parts of Pakistan. Its use in India is in decline with urban land measurements standardizing on use of square meters and square yards.

Under British rule the marla and kanal were standardized so that the kanal equals exactly 605 square yards or 1/8 acre; this is equivalent to about 505.857 square meters. A kanal is equal to 20 marlas.

Kanal (2015 film)

Kanal (English: Ember) is a 2015 Indian Malayalam thriller-road movie, directed by M. Padmakumar. Starring Mohanlal, Anoop Menon, Atul Kulkarni, Pratap Pothan, Honey Rose, Sheelu Abraham and Nikita Thukral. The film was produced by Abaam Movies in association with Aashirvad Cinemas. Ouseppachan and Vinu Thomas composed the soundtrack. Mohanlal, Padmakumar and writer Suresh Babu joined together for the second time since the 2010 film Shikkar. The principal photography commenced in May 2015 in Kochi and completed in August 2015. Kochi, Hyderabad, Karwar, Goa and Qatar were the filming locations. The film gained mixed to positive critical response.

Plot

The story is set against the backdrop of global phenomenon "recession", a time when economic collapse were being felt in the United Arab Emirates. The story revolves around a thriller - revenge plot that has resulted as an aftereffect of recession. The story explores the basic nature of cruelty and love in human nature through the lives of four individuals John David (Mohanlal, V.N.), Anantharaman (Anoop Menon), Raghuchandran (Pratap Pothan) and Kuruvila Mathew (Atul Kulkarni).
